SHREVEPORT The federal civil rights trial of Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal has begun, and it may go faster than expected if Monday mornings session is indicative of U.S. District Judge Donald E. Walters pace. The jury of 12 nine white, three black was seated just after noon Monday. Throughout the voir dire process, Walter pressed prosecuting and defense attorneys to move forward and stay on topic, shutting down any attempt to grandstand or press specific ideas on the jury pool. On the prosecution side, Walter stopped lead prosecutor Mark Blumberg after he tried asking a juror first if the federal government should investigate law enforcement officers, then asked what good and, when he received no response, what bad could come from it. Im not going to allow this kind of questioning, Walter said. Lets get this out of the way. Do you think it would be difficult to sit in judgement of a fellow law enforcement officer? Moments later, Walter stepped in again when Blumberg asked jurors about the recent ruling in the Bundy standoff case in Oregon.
